Guide to the place of remembrance
Nowy Targ
People, not numbers
The Popiela Family “Centrum” Foundation
In November 2021, stone tablets bearing the names of Holocaust victims were unveiled at the Jewish cemetery in Nowy Targ. Between 700 and 1,000 people were shot at the cemetery.
A short history
The project provided for two memorials: a central memorial with the names of the victims, like those in Krościenko, Grybów and Czarny Dunajec, in the form of a broken matzevah, and a “Matzevah of Remembrance” at the mass grave. Between 700 and 1,000 people are known to have been executed at the cemetery. Educational panels complete the site.
Conduct at a Jewish cemetery
- Men cover their heads.
- Walk only on the paths and never stand on graves.
- Do not touch or move the matzevot (gravestones).
- Instead of flowers, Jewish tradition is to place a small stone on the matzevah.
- Do not eat or drink in the cemetery.
- Cemeteries are not visited on the Sabbath (from Friday evening to Saturday evening) or on Jewish holidays.
- It is customary to wash your hands after leaving the cemetery.
